The Doc and Rosa Lee Watson MusicFest ‘N Sugar Grove is held on the grounds of the Historic Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove each July. The festival is family friendly, just as Doc would want it. The festival grounds feature a playground, two music stages and concessions. Inside the Historic Cove Creek School is the Doc Watson Museum at Cove Creek and the ‘Pickin Parlor for all the musicians – professional or not – attending the festival.

World-renown performers have played and continue to play the festival. In years past, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Kruger Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show and, of course, Deep Gap-native Doc Watson are some of the musicians to have performed at MusicFest ‘N Sugar Grove. The festival began in 1998 as Doc Watson Appreciate Day because Doc helped so many families experiencing tragedies with benefit concerts. “For years, Doc has been helping people in the county, so folks wanted to do an appreciation for him here,” said the late Tommy Walsh, former co-chair of the festival, “We went out here that day and decided it was a good crowd, and everyone came out to wish Doc well, and it started from there.” Though the festival started out as Doc Watson Appreciation Day, the actual purpose was to raise monies for the Historic Cove Creek School that was built during the Great Depression and has since provided revenues to renovate the facility into a building that enriches and enlivens the community through community health, sustainable development and jobs.
