Fred’s General Mercantile
In February of 1979, Fred and Margie Pfol transformed a little piece of property at the top of Beech Mountain into the thriving business now known as Fred’s General Mercantile. The store was built with family in mind. Fred and Margie lived upstairs above the store until just a few years ago, which enabled them to better help their customers. During the early years, their inventory was small and everything was on the main level. The store started out with tee shirts, groceries, hardware and a few other items. Since then the store has expanded to include a ski shop and even a deli which has made Fred’s General Mercantile a Beech Mountain institution.
The Store
The main store consists of groceries, hardware and clothing from Columbia Sportsware, Woolrich and more. And Fred’s is known for its great supply of nick-nacks and gift items to take home with you after a trek up the mountain. But if Fred’s doesn’t have it, they will be sure to try to find it. Fred’s is happy to ship any item that they carry straight to you.
The Backside Deli
Fred’s Backside Deli serves delicious sandwiches, homemade soups, salads, beverages and homemade desserts like brownies, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. The deli offers a beautiful garden patio, or you can grab your lunch to go in a picnic style for that special outing. Dine in, carry out and call ahead are all available. The deli is open daily from 7:30am to 3pm.
Ski and Snowboard Rentals
Fred’s has been renting the finest ski equipment since 1980. Open from 7:30am to 10:30pm, Fred’s rentals will help with every aspect of your trip. Start with a visit to the shop to pick out your rental equipment, accessories and warm weather gear. The ski and snowboard technicians will help you with all of your equipment needs. Whether you are an expert sportsman or just trying out the slopes, Fred’s has everything you need.
The Guest Quarters
The Guest Quarters give a unique combination of setting, décor and personal touch that is fitting of Beech Mountain. The Guest Quarters are located upstairs in the annex of the store. The entrance greets guests with a stained glass window and contains fine wood paneling inside. The furniture includes comfortable couches, a wood stove and a well-equipped kitchen and two furnished bedrooms containing king-sized beds.
Wreaths
Fred’s General Mercantile sells Christmas wreaths during the holidays made out of Beech Mountain Frasier fir, 24 inches in diameter, with a weatherproof red bow. Fred’s will be happy to ship your wreath to you right to your home. For more information about the holiday wreaths, call 828-387-4838.
